The room has grown cold. When my wife lights

the fire behind me, the window fills

with its flickering glow. It’s a kind of smile

that eases me from the chair, and she’s there

with me, both ready for the night to come.

Crying over “Scarlet Ribbons”

I remember my daughter wanted pink

plastic barrettes for her hair. One on each

side of her forehead. They are there, I think,

in this blurred photo of her on a beach

somewhere in Washington, and in this one,

sitting on a ceramic pirate’s lap

at a zoo in Madison, Wisconsin.

I swear they are under her sailor cap

here as she drives a tiny British race car

in Tomorrowland. On a camping trip

through North Dakota, one beloved star-

shapedbarrette was lost when I failed to clip

it properly in place. We backtracked all

the way to Grand Forks in search of new

pink stars. And here she stands in early fall,

hair grown longer now, light finding the two

barrettes we bought at an old drugstore just

as the day and our hopes seemed lost.
